In its recent financial report, Nintendo has revealed official sales figures for its hardware and software. The company has confirmed that the recently-launched Nintendo Switch 2 has sold 5.82 million units, while the original Switch has hit 153.10 million units. On the software side of things, the Switch 2 has hit 8.67 million units, while the original Switch has sold 1.4 billion units.

For the sake of comparison, the company has also provided sales data for both hardware and software for its previous generation of home and handheld consoles. The Wii U, for example, had sold only 13.56 million units throughout its lifetime, with software sales of 103.60 million units. The company’s previous handheld system, the Nintendo 3DS, had sold 75.94 million units, with 392.28 million units of software sold.

Aside from the Nintendo Switch, the most successful home console for Nintendo by far has been the Wii, which sold 101.63 million units over the course of its lifetime, and 921.85 million units in software sales. On the handheld side of things, the Switch is trailing just slightly behind the Nintendo DS, which had sold 154.02 million units. The Switch still leads against the DS when it comes to software sales, however, with the latter having sold 948.76 million units.

With all of this taken into account, the Nintendo Switch 2’s sales figures are even more impressive, since the console was launched relatively recently. The console, priced at $449.99, was launched with a host of games, including Mario Kart World, which has also ended up setting a new standard for game pricing thanks to its $80 price tag. The Switch 2 is also available as part of a bundle alongside Mario Kart World, priced at $499.99.

Back in July, sales data for the Switch 2 in the US came to light, revealing that the console had already started breaking records in the country. The console had sold 1.6 million units in its first month in the country alone, far surpassing the previous record, which was set by the PS4 when it first launched with 1.1 million units in its first month in 2013. This was a follow-up to Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa confirming that 3.5 million units of the Switch 2 had been sold in its first four days.

Thanks to these figures, the Switch 2 is currently the best-selling piece of video game hardware in the country in terms of both number of units sold, as well as in terms of revenue generated through these sales. Despite the console’s impressive launch figures, however, the US market is still dominated by the PS5 when it comes to year-to-year sales figures for revenue generated and units sold.

The Nintendo Switch 2, launched worldwide on June 4, is a follow up to 2017’s Nintendo Switch. The new console boasts quite a few improvements over its predecessor in terms of hardware as well as software, including support for newer technologies like variable refresh rate and even Nvidia’s DLSS.
