Hell is Us Includes 3 Combat Difficulty Presets and Optional Death Penalty

Hell is Us_03

If it weren’t enough to announce a PC demo and system requirements for Hell is Us, developer Rogue Factor has also outlined the game’s difficulty settings. You have three combat presets (Lenient, Balanced, and Mercyless) from the outset, which affect enemy health, damage and aggressiveness.

Each can be tuned separately, so if you prefer more aggressive foes who don’t hit as hard or those with near-lethal blows and minuscule health, have at it. One of the more notable aspects is the Death Penalty. When enabled, it turns Hell is Us into a Souls-like with a supposed twist.

After you die, any slain enemies and XP gained since the last save reset. While the former is standard fare, it’s unknown if you can pick up the latter from your site of death. It’s also unclear if it applies to all XP gained. Could you theoretically go back to level one after a single death?

We’ll find out when the demo goes live today at 4 PM UTC on PC. Hell is Us launches on September 4th for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC.
