While Helldivers 2 has been getting continued support in the form of major updates bringing in new content to the game, developer Arrowhead Game Studios has also revealed that it has big plans for the eventual sequel to the title as well. In a post on the official Discord server for the title (as caught by Reddit user Glitch_Unlimited), CEO Shams Jorjani revealed that a social hub was already on the feature list for the next Helldivers game.
Jorjani’s message came as a response to a player asking if Helldivers 2 would ever get a social hub where all players can hang out, similar to the Tower in both Destiny games. In its current state, the closest thing Helldivers 2 offers to a hub is a player’s spaceship, where they can hang out alongside up to three co-op partners between they dive down to the planet for their next mission.
It is worth noting that, with his message, Jorjani all but confirms that this kind of social hub will not be coming to Helldivers 2 at any point. Since it is a planned feature for the sequel, however, we might some day see it. However, Arrowhead Game Studios tend to have long development times for its games, and with Helldivers 2 being just a year and a half old at this point, a potential third game in the series is likely still quite some time away.
Currently, the studio still has quite a few things planned for Helldivers 2, with community manager Katherine Baskin commenting back in July that content for the title for “the next few years” has already been planned out. “I know what’s coming for Helldivers for the next few years,” said Baskin. “It’s important that I know, so I can help develop and engage the community alongside whatever we’re doing,” she continued, while also saying that plans are “subject to change”.
Jorjani had previously spoken about how there are no plans at the studio to slow down when it comes to making new things for the game. Answering questions on the title’s Discord channel, he mentioned that the entire studio is currently focused on Helldivers 2. “Nah,” responded Jorjani when asked if the studio has started doing anything for its next project. “It’s ALL Helldivers 2 for now. A very, very small team will spin up something later this year and go at it slowly. Helldivers is our main focus and will be for a loooong time.”
“As long as you folks keep playing and buying Super Credits we can keep it going,” Jorjani said. “Last summer we were kinda screwing the pooch so it looked like we wouldn’t be able to keep the train going for a long time – but we turned the ship around, you support us a lot so it’s looking bright.”
Helldivers 2 is available on PC, PS5 and, as of just last month, Xbox Series X/S. Earlier this month, Arrowhead Game Studios had released the Into the Unjust update for the co-op shooter, which brought with it new gameplay content in the form of underground tunnels where players take on Terminid forces.
