Assassin’s Creed Mirage Developer Has Ideas for More Stories with Protagonist Basim
Last year’s Assassin’s Creed Mirage was very much a back-to-the-basics moment for Ubisoft’s flagship franchise, opting to have a smaller world with a gameplay loop focused on stealth and parkouring, rather than the RPG mechanics that the series has become known for. Whether or not we’ll ever see a direct follow-up to Mirage is a question that some series fans have wondered at since the game launched last October, and though there’s no concrete answers on that front yet, its development team certainly seems open to the idea of making more games with Mirage’s protagonist Basim.
Caught by VGC, in a recent Reddit AMA, when asked about potential DLC plans, Assassin’s Creed Mirage Stephane Boudon reiterated that there are no such plans in place, but added that the development team does have ideas for more stories with Basim that it could tap into eventually.
In another response, Boudon added that Ubisoft still has “a lot to say” about Basim, but said that it would be just as exciting to work on something new with fewer restraints than a prequel like Mirage would come with.
“Telling the coming-of-age story of Basim was a blast for us, so clearly, yes, we still have a lot to say about Basim,” he wrote. “On the other hand, creating a game with that much constrains is a difficult exercise, and as the team we would also love to explore new horizons and have more creative freedom.”
Assassin’s Creed Mirage was itself a prequel, of course, covering the origins and younger years of Basim, who was first introduced as an older Hidden One in 2020’s Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. Clearly, Basim has become important to the series’ larger framework, but whether we’ll ever see him as a game’s leading man again remains to be seen.
For now, next up for Ubisoft’s franchise is Assassin’s Creed Codename Red, while the game after that, Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe, is also in development.
