Hazelight Studios’ It Takes Two is the bigger success, with over 16 million units sold, but its first title, A Way Out, is still selling well. The co-op prison escape title has crossed nine million sales since launching in 2018 for PS4, Xbox One and PC, per the developer on Twitter.
Set in 1972, the story sees two convicts, Vincent and Leo, working together to escape a prison. Each has their own motivations, but the gameplay is noteworthy for its heavy co-op focus and precise cooperation. A Way Out is playable in split-screen and online co-op for two players, but there is no matchmaking.
In the same tweet, Hazelight notes that development was a “wild ride.” Though successful when it launched (with one million copies sold in the first month), “We never dared to dream of THIS many people playing our game!” It’s teasing some “unexpected behind-the-scenes stuff” next for It Takes Two, while its next project will seemingly have a reveal later this year. Stay tuned for updates in the meantime.
A Way Out has now sold more than 9 million units! 💥
The development was a wild ride and the game was already a success back when it released. But even then, we never dared to dream of THIS many people playing our game! 😍
